WORKS

Rubbed Raw, 2023

Materials: Raw Wool, Found Wood, Rope, Wax

Dimensions: 8′ x 8′

Rubbed Raw Process: Wet felting was used to create the base shapes. Needle felting was used to create density and physicality on each shape. Raw wool was spun into yarn with a drop spindle hand constructed by the artist for this project. Yarn was then crocheted into and around the felted shapes, and used to suspend and bind them to each other. The found branch was cleaned, and processed gradually, so one end is fully processed and the other is fully raw from the forest floor. The most processed end is waxed and buffed.

Statement:

I often struggle to conceptualize the scale of destruction within our natural environments as a consequence of human action and climate change. The ambiguity of loss unseen, amplifies devastation as grief cannot be processed. It then becomes quite easy to be consumed with fear, the weight of which can result in inaction or depression. My goal with this work is to create a space to illuminate and process ecological grief as consequential to the loss of natural life, resources, and biodiversity. Such loss often exists only as intangible concepts from which humans are easily removed. In the making, I also started to heavily consider ambiguous loss of loved ones, noticing a similar sense of disorientation and distress, especially when there is no body or resting place.

Through invented rituals of mourning, I have created a body outside my own for grief to reside.
